Hannsjörg Voth : Masterpieces in the Moroccan desert

The German artist Hannsjörg Voth, who lived from 1997 to 2003 in the southern desert of Morocco, was known by his own style Land Art that he built in the middle of nowhere in the desert of Marha, between Goulmima and Erfoud.

He was so obsessed with the astrophysics that he constructed 3 innovative structures with the help of the local workers.

First project :  Stairway to Heaven

He started it in 1980 and finished it in 1987. It is a 16 meters high stairway with 56 steps leading to an entrance at the top, and there is a possibility to slide inside the stairs to access to the different rooms situated inside the structure in the desert.

Second project : Golden Spiral

This spiral is a wall of more than 260 meters. It starts from the ground and reaches the 6 meters in height. It was built between 1993 and 1997 in the desert. If you see it from the sky, it has the shape of the snail.

Third project : City of Orion

It was built between 1998 and 2003 in the Moroccan desert. It is composed of seven towers in the image of the seven most visible stars of the constellation, their dimensions would have been calculated in proportion to the size and brightness of the stars.

Moreover, a common point to these three works: the presence of a well, symbol of survival in the desert.

These masterpieces are well known to the inhabitants of Erfoud and largely admired in the world. But unfortunately still unknown to most Moroccans.
